Shri Chandrashekhar Phanse (Sitarist – Performer / Teacher) hails from Mumbai, India. Attained a B.A in Economics & Psychology in 1984.
In 1983 he obtained his VADYA VISHARAD in sitar at the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth in Lucknow. He then achieved an M.A with 1st class & 2nd in Merit in Sitar at the Indira kala Sangeet Vishwa Vidhyalaya, Khairagarh, Madhya Pradesh.
If music were the ambrosia for the soul then Shri Chandrashekhar’s cup is brimming. His skill is a melodious implement for the indefinite mines of the sitar strings.
A musical ear is an innate gift of all but to be tutored in its subtleties is a privileged of only a few. Shri Chandrashekhar’s efforts are to unlock the musical code by holding lecture demonstrations and music appreciation sessions for all those interested and the uninitiated. Presently he has more than fifty students under his wing.
All of us enjoy film songs and Shri Chandrashekhar has cut a CD to that effect: The Singing Sitar. He does not boast of any previous linking’s to any musical background/ family. His passion for music, both instrumental and vocal has stemmed wholly from his being.
Shri Chandrashekhar achieved his educational qualifications with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Economics. His Bachelor of Music from Bhatkhande Vidyapeeth Lucknow earned him title Vadya Visharad. His quest further led to a Masters in Sitar from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishvavidyalaya (IKSV) Securing 2nd rank in merit from Kairagarh. This pursuit reflects in his music, which has the precision of numbers and the depth of emotion.
His earlier tutelage has been under Pandit Kartik Kumar And Shri V.R. Athavale Dinkar Kaikini. He has been fortunate to have further honed his skills under the expert guidance of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan saheb.
Shri Chandrashekhar is a noted sitarist whose forte is authentic sitar playing in the Hindustani classical tradition. His career spans 25 years of rendering recitals, coaching in both the sitar and vocal singing and conducting lecture-demonstrations, explaining the nuances of Indian classical music and the sitar. Shri Chandrashekhar’s ‘Singing Sitar’ a melodious musical bouquet of evergreen Hindi film songs rendered on the sitar is truly enjoyable by all.
Shri Chandrashekhar has performed in several prestigious venues like NCPA, Y.B. Chavan Auditorium, Homi Bhabha Auditorium at TIFR and also at the Vallabh Sangeet Vidyalay and Deodhar School of Indian Music.
Besides this, he has also toured South Africa, performing at the Indian Embassy, Johannesburg and at several other venues across the country.
Music enthusiasts have been enthralled by his performances.. His mastery over the sitar has captivated audiences everywhere.
To impart his vast music knowledge to the masses, Shri Chandrashekhar has released a music series named Inspiration explaining the various nuances and intricacies of classical music in simple layman’s terms. He has also contributed to the spread of love of classical music among students of music and music lovers through a 26 episode TV serial ‘Swaramala’ on DD Bharati, which was well received by the viewers.
Shri Chandrashekhar’s Devotion to music is not any less than the Devotion to God, which can transport one to the realms of the Divine.
