Hailing from the aristocratic family of Malsisar, in the Shekhawati region of erstwhile Rajputana, now Rajasthan, Rajnigandha Kumari Shekhawat grasped royal folk music from the dholan and dholis (traditional folk singers), who were under the Malsisar family’s patronage.
With no singers pursuing this genre currently, Rajasthani Royal folk music is a genre that is dying a fast death. It is this genre fading into the clouds of oblivion that Rajnigandha has chosen to revive and renown. She has fused these age old tunes and lyrics with contemporary arrangements and modern sounds to add to the eclectic fusion and cross the language barrier to reach out to a larger audience.
Defying strict Rajput family tradition and taking up singing as her preferred art,
Rajnigandha excelled in music since her days at the Maharani Gayatri Devi School in Jaipur. She later learnt Hindustani classical music for nearly 10 years – from Rajasthan Sangeet Sansthan, Sawai Man Singh Sangeet Sansthan and from her Gurus Pt Laxman Bhatt Tailang in Jaipur and Pt Rattan Mohan Sharma in Mumbai. She has various recordings to her credit, like Remixes, jingles, and playbacks and over 250 concerts worldwide, and it is with the album ‘Soul of the Desert’ that she makes her debut as an artist in the Indian music scenario.
In this album she brings the rich brocade of her Rajasthani heritage to life. Drench yourself in this exotic and passionate music, and romance the rich culture of this colourful land as Rajnigandha spills the royal fragrance in your space!
